Why do we aerate greens?
Aeration alleviates soil compaction and the build up of organic matter under the root bed by creating more air space in the soil profile. This is achieved with machines that produce holes in the soil and remove cores. Aeration allows water and essential nutrients to more effectively pass through to the root system which promotes deeper root growth and healthy turf grass.
This video from the United States Golf Association (USGA) explains the process and reasons why aeration is necessary.
